Keeping Fit in Huatulco: Workouts in Paradise

I just got back from Mexico, and let me tell you, the heat is insane. If you’re planning a run, do it early unless you want to be a puddle on the sidewalk – lesson learned!

Now, Barcelo’s all-inclusive resorts – the food is bomb, but those calories stick like glue. I thought I could eat anything, thanks to my workouts. Turns out, not so much.

We spent an epic 10 days in Huatulco for my dad’s 60th with the whole fam – 11 of us in total. It was a trip to remember. Besides squeezing in some workouts, we chilled hard – beach lounging, releasing baby turtles, a 6-hour fishing trip (yep, we caught some fish), snorkeling, and more. The highlight? Dad’s 60th on a rented yacht – bays, snorkeling, lunch on a secluded island, and wildlife galore (Whales, Dolphins, Turtles & Manta Rays). Even finding out I get seasick didn’t stop me from soaking up the sun.

Let’s be real, who vacations to work out? Not me. Teresa hooked me up with 10 days of workouts on Training Perks before I left – Tri basics, swim, bike, run, and some dryland rehearsals. Easy swims in the ocean filled my days, plus a few lap sessions with my folks – harder than it sounds in a waist-deep pool.

First ‘big’ workout in Mexico? A 5KM run with my mom. Planned a run 2.5 walk 2.5, but my body rebelled – more like a run 1 walk 4 vibe. Mom dropped wisdom: it’s about the journey, not just the finish line. Lesson learned: Listen to your body. It’s cool if you’re not the running champ you used to be. Starting fresh is legit.

Two more runs with mom, the second uphill to hit the HUATULCO sign for that sweaty face pic. On the way back down my pace slowed, had to channel Chi Running to avoid injuries – I’m a bit accident-prone with my lower body, but that’s a story for another time.

All in all it was a great vacation and I would highly recommend adding Huatulco to your bucket list. Balancing exercise and relaxation was the plan, but I’ll admit, relaxation won out a bit more.
